The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary

This past month, I’ve had the privilege of reading an Advanced Copy for the purpose of writing a book review of “The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary…A True Store of Resilience and Recovery”.  For the animal lover, especially the chimp fan, this book is a must read!  The author; Andrew Westoll is an award-winning narrative journalist who once lived as a monkey researcher in the jungles of Surimame and most recently went to live and work with Gloria Grow at Fauna Sanctuary.  Most of the chimpanzees in Gloria’s care come from the horror of primate research in the United States.  As Andrew gets to knows these chimps, he begins a journey to track down the scientists, lab techs, and care takers of these chimps past lives.

Though all the chimps at Fauna Sanctuary have a past, Tom’s story was perhaps the saddest yet most resilient of them all.  Tom spent 30-years at NYU as a research animal and survived over 300 procedures.  The journey that Gloria took to build Fauna Sanctuary, the live of these wonderful creatures who have been saved by coming to the sanctuary; and the experiences that Andrew shares with us while getting to know each and every one of these rescued chimps will make you both laugh and cry.  This book is well written, engaging and simply a must read!  It’s been an honor to preview this wonderful book and in learning about Gloria and the Chimps, I’m proud to do my part to spread the word!
